Ultrasound Guidance in Central Venous Access Increases Accuracy With Children, Study Finds

A new study from the Stanford University School of Medicine and the Lucile Packard Children’s Hospital compares “landmark- to ultrasound-guided central venous access when performed by pediatric surgeons.” While ultrasound guidance is commonly used for placing venous catheters in adults, it is not as widely accepted by pediatric surgeons, according to the American College of Surgeons. The conclusion of the study states that “Ultrasound reduced the number of cannulation attempts necessary for venous access,” which “indicates a potential to reduce complications when ultrasound is used by pediatric surgeons.”

At BK Ultrasound, we’re always interested in how doctors use ultrasound. As of today, 140 US and Canadian anesthesia and pain management specialists gave us their feedback in an ongoing, informal survey on their use of ultrasound for nerve blocks and vascular access procedures. The majority of respondents indicated that they do use ultrasound to guide procedures, though these results may be skewed by self-selection.
